Small Groups

There's a small group for everyone, and a place for everyone to belong.

Why Small Groups?
Why Small Groups?

Southwest's vision is to help people begin and continue a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.  And one of Southwest's core values is that life-change happens best in small groups.

Caring
Caring

Yes, Southwest is a larger church and when the church comes together in a larger gathering, it can be difficult to experience intimate, personal connections.  That's why we believe participating in small groups is so vital.

In a small group setting, you can experience those personal connections, the care, the community we all crave. God intended for us to travel on our spiritual journeys in community with others, not having to stand alone.  In a small group we can experience authentic, supportive, caring relationships with friends who want to learn and "do life together".

Learning
Learning

A small group is a safe place to explore, ask questions, share ideas and learn how to apply the truth of God's Word, the Bible, in everyday life.  Most small groups work through discussion-based study guides, with the group leader or co-leader facilitating discussions.  Many excellent study guides are available and Southwest's resource library offers a good selection of recommended books and resources.

Praying
Praying

A small group is an ideal setting in which to learn to pray and to share with one another.  And when we see the results - answered prayers - we're encouraged to make prayer a more meaningful part of our lives.  In small groups, members are encouraged to share and to pray for each other both during the group meetings as well as throughout the week.

Growing
Growing

A small group can be a catalyst for spiritual growth, a place to practice and grow in our God-given abilities, to apply what we're learning about God and His Word, and to be supportive and accountable to each other in a safe environment.  One of the objectives of small groups is to help develop competent leaders who may someday lead or host their own groups.  That's why we encourage group members to try their hand at facilitating a meeting (without any pressure) in a safe, comfortable environment. In addition, both leaders and members have access to a variety of materials for personal growth, training and support in the form of coaching, books, conferences and tapes.

Serving
Serving

Small groups provide opportunities to love others through acts of kindness both inside and outside the group.  Group members can serve each other with tangible expressions of support, like making a meal or visiting a sick friend.  Groups are also encouraged to volunteer their services through a variety of church ministries and Community Service Projects.

Together

"There's nothing as empty as feeling alone" - and the opposite of this is true.  We need one another, and we were made for community.  At Southwest, we want to live into our name - to be a church that is relevant in our community and intentional about building strong relationships that are meaningful and life-changing.  Small Groups teach us how to do this - sharing life, caring, learning, growing and serving together.
